Guard Dog Protects Ducks and Geese

Didn’t get a lot of sleep last night, as the *Yip-Yip* dog was complaining all night long about being tied up outside the duck pen. He is out there as I type.  The ducks and geese didn’t seem to mind too much, as they all woke up this morning, alive.  But the good news is that there were five, yes five, little chicks that hatched out from under the broody Black Giant Hen.  I heard a lot of peep, peep, peeping last night when I ran out with the 12 gauge, thinking that the Yip-yip dog was alerting me to the presence of a duck predator.  Didn’t go to investigate the peep, peep, peeping in the dark as I was quite intent about killing a duck eater.  One does get a bit edgy about being woken up in the middle of a dead sleep.

But during the light of day, it was really nice to see the proud mama hen leading her fresh hatchlings around in the pen.  I hope that they can be quiet enough NOT to attract the attention of the duck killing predator.  We have had enough death around here, with the exception of those duck killing varmints, that need to be kilt.

2browndawgs, perhaps I wasn’t too clear; the Black Giant hen is a CHICKEN. So the hatchlings are actually in the chicken pen, and are part of my chicken layer flock.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.
