Barred Rock Hen Found Dead…In Mouth of Neighbor’s Dog

When you raise animals, you get used to finding them dead.  Death is a part of life, after all.  But yesterday, as old Uncle Milton gazed out the family room window, he saw a sight that he obviously does not want to get used to- the neighbor’s dog chewing on one of his egg laying Barred Rock hens.

Tighter Security, Talk with Neighbors

We really don’t know how the hen died.  But we do know that neighbor poochy likes the taste of chicken, as the head, neck, most of the breast and both wings were eaten.  This is unsettling because he is otherwise a likeable dog.  But at the current rate, we would have no more eggs coming at all before summer arrived.

Dog food is much cheaper.  So we will work on tightening up security as in adding more stakes to the chicken pen fence.  And we will ask the neighbors to restrain their dog from visiting.

And life will go on.

Eek! I hope the neighbor’s dog is not brown! A shame about the hen and of course poor chick duck.
