Summer-Out with a BANG!

September 21, 2010

92 degrees Last day of summer

Here in the GBA we are having a heat wave on the last day of summer.  After many just plain beautiful days, with cool nights, today it is 92 degrees fahrenheit.

C'mon in, the water's fine!

So, naturally the ducks are splashing and dunking and flapping up a storm.  There is a pretty good breeze today, and these birds LOVE to get in the water, thrash it good, then climb out and flap their wings until they are dry.

The greenhead on the right just flapped up out of the water, and is drying his wings, by flapping vigorously.  The ducks were having such a good time, flying in and out, and then preening.  They spend a good amount of time distributing oil from a gland on the rump, onto all their feathers.  This makes the colors stand out, and waterproofs the bird.

What a great way to spend the last, hot day of summer!
