Planting Chart

April 9, 2010

With our interest in growing healthy, tasty vegetables, this chart from http://www.almanac.com should help us. Their site allows one to type in their own zip code, and receive recommendations for planting many different vegetables.  Note below that they also alert us that the average last day of frost for zip code 46750 is April 29.

You may find a whole lot more interesting information at the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” website, and old Uncle Milton recommends that you pick up a hard copy at your local seed store. There is so much to learn, and so many interesting articles.  You will note from the chart below that in our area that this is the *best* time to plant cucumbers, melons, pumpkins and squash indoors.  It is also recommended to plant beets, broccoli and parsnips outdoors.

50% probability of frost free after April 29 (at COLUMBIA CITY, IN climate station).
